Testing, testing …

Hey, hey, blog readers! LP coming at you from Monday’s test session here at Gainesville Raceway. It’s early in the morning as I type, and the track is slowly starting to come to life. From the looks of things, several teams plan to stay and test today, each one hoping to gather information that will push them closer to their goal: winning. The Snap-on teams goal is the same, of course, and we hope to make the best of what we learn here today.

First and foremost, we want to say congratulations to our friends Gary Densham and everybody on the Racebricks team. They made quite a showing yesterday, making it to the final round against Tony Pedregon. They have been busting their butts, and it was great to see them make it to the final.

Gainesville, Saturday: Doug Herbert, owner and driver of the SnaponFranchise.com Top Fuel dragster, feels confident after only two sessions of qualifying for the ACDelco Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.

For the second race in a row, rain showers forced NHRA officials to cancel Friday’s qualifying sessions, allowing each team only two attempts on Saturday to make the hotly contested field.

Herbert and the Snap-on team got to work, posting a stout 4.62 second pass at 318.09 mph, placing them in the No. 9 position.

“The rain came on Friday just like it did at the last race,” said Herbert. “That really puts everyone under the gun. Just like in Phoenix, our goal today was to make it down the track and into the field, and we did just that.”

On hand in the Snap-on pit area on Saturday were several Marines, lead by Sgt. Eric Kidwell, who presented Herbert with a plaque saluting his 2008 “For My Boys” Tour.

“We host Marines every year at the Gatornationals,” said Herbert, “and to have them give this to us means a lot. We want to make my boys proud, and we want to make the Marines proud, too.”

Also seen in the pit area were musician Jimmie Van Zant and several of his friends and family. Van Zant presented Herbert with an autographed guitar to auction off to raise money for BRAKES, the organization Herbert founded, after losing his sons James and Jon in an automobile accident, to help educate teens on responsible driving.

Herbert Plans for Busy and
Sentimental Gainesville Race Weekend

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 12, 2008) For Doug Herbert, owner and driver of the SnaponFranchise.com Top Fuel dragster, this weekend’s ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals will be more sentimental than most. The event will mark Herbert’s 313th NHRA Top Fuel start. It doesn’t seem like a very sentimental number, until you hear the story.

Less than two months ago, Herbert’s two sons, Jon, 17, and James, 12, lost their lives in a tragic automobile accident. James, an active Boy Scout working toward the same Eagle Scout rank as his father, was part of Troop 313 in Huntersville, N.C. Even through his pain, Herbert remains an active member of Troop 313, helping other young men work toward their Eagle Scout.
